 Another Green Team Effort

In the preparation and serving of the recent Harvest Dinner at Park Presbyterian Church, about 15 gallons of biodegradable materials were consciously collected and are being composted within a huge pile of leaves at Gerry Benedict’s composting yard.

The Harvest Dinner materials separated included:

  • Biodegradable  items
    • Preparation materials
      • Potato peeling from over 150 pounds of potatoes
      • Squash rinds
    • Uneaten Harvest Dinner plate and serving bowl scrapings
      • Dressing, Gravy, Some pork scraps,Butter pads …minus the tin foil wrapping, mashed potatoes, Rolls, Mixed vegetables,A variety of pies and crust, Milk,  Coffee, Applesauce, Cold slaw
    • Napkins
    • Paper place mates
    • Paper pie plates

Recyclable items that were placed in the familiar ‘blue’ boxes:
Aluminum foil items, Metal cans, Plastic containers, Cardboard, Plastic bags

A year from now these materials will be growing vegetables or reintroduced into the manufacturing process and will NOT be moldering away and taking up space in one of our local landfills.

Really clean is GREEN!

On Saturday, October 16th the above crew walked and removed litter from both sides of Route 88
between the Wide-Awake Grange Hall and the Village Office Building in Phelps. Most of the litter
picked up were the usual fast food items of styrofoam/plastic cups & lids, soda/beer cans, plastic
wrap, cardboard, cigarette packs and motor vehicle parts. As you drive along our highways, please
do your part and make sure these items when purchased are disposed of properly.

Our next Adopt-a-Highway clean up will be the spring. Hope you will consider helping us out.
